Recognizing Different Types of Interview Questions:
During an interview an interviewer will ask different types of questions. It’s important to be familiar with these different types of questions and to know how to answer them accordingly. Below is a list of different types of interview questions
TYPES OF QUESTIONS:
1. Open ended
- When an interviewer asks an open ended questions such as, “Tell me about yourself.”
- Answer with structure
- Example: 2 key accomplishments you want them to know about you using the STAR technique (Situation, Task, Action and Result)
2. Behavioural
- When an interviewer asks for examples from your past such as, “Can you give me an example of when you solved a complex problem?"
- Answer with the STAR technique
- Situation = brief description of the situation you were in
- Task = what needed to get done
- Action = what you did
- Result = what the result was
3. Hypothetical
- When an interviewer provides a set of circumstances and asks you to describe how you would handle the situation
- Try to structure your answer similar to #1
- If appropriate reference a similar situation you had in the past and how you dealt with it
4. Closed
- When an interviewer asks you a brief question such as, “Do you know SAP?”
- Answer yes or no, but add a brief positive elaboration
5. Negatives
- When an interviewer asks you a negative structured question such as, “What is your greatest weakness?”
- Answer by picking one that is not essential to the position and say what you are doing to improve it.
