Job Description

Our client, a leading Food & Beverage Consumer Goods Company, located in Mississauga, ON is looking to hire a Senior Product Developer to join their team on a Permanent, Full-Time basis.

Reporting to the Group Product Development Leader, the Senior Product Developer will serve as a subject matter expert in the areas of product development, product and process interaction and sensory evaluation.

This position will provide technical expertise and project management for products from the concept phase, through scale-up, to successful commercialization for ground-up innovation and customer-led product development. This role will additionally be responsible for developing and executing design of experiments and analyzing and interpreting data to make sound technical recommendations on product and product/process interactions.

Job Responsibilities:

Product Development

  • Develop new products, concepts and applications
  • Lead product tastings and product approvals with internal stakeholders
  • Conduct product physical and sensory analysis using in-house and external resources to set product development direction for process continuous improvement activities
  • Prepare samples for customer requests
  • Lead or assist in the preparation of protocols and technical reports for product development and validating new products and processes
  • Establish and approve product packaging, label and nutritional information
  • Participate in quality and product improvement activities
  • Provide technical expertise and leadership to Product Developers and Product Development team

Product/Process Interaction

  • Develop specifications for new products for suitability with existing manufacturing systems and feasibly of new technologies; including establishing physical and sensory profile product specifications
  • Apply product and process interaction knowledge to deliver quality and cost effective product solutions
  • Provide technical expertise and leadership to Operations to support new and improved product launches with accountability for best in class scale-up to manufacturing.

Project Management

  • Plan, prepare and execute design of experiment studies
  • Plan, prepare and coordinate product trials for scale-up
  • Participate as an active member in cross-functional project teams

Sensory Assessment

  • Evaluate, describe and document the product sensory profile for raw materials, products in development, and finished goods. This includes utilizing side by side comparisons, comparing samples to a sensory profile specification and developing ground up sensory profile specification for new products.
  • Conduct sensory assessments to standardize sensory assessment practices and protocol across the business
  • Responsible for meeting all customer specific sensory specifications and requirements when developing customer specific products

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science or Food Processing or Chemical Engineering
  • 7 - 10 years in the Food and Beverage Industry
  • A minimum of 7 years of relevant product development experience and product process (equipment) interaction.
  • Leadership experience an asset
  • Experience in sensory evaluation, and the ability to assess products objectively. Sensory training, preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of impact of ingredients and formula on manufacturing
  • Ability to travel

Other Requirements:

  • Understand, support, and comply with Company, Provincial and Federal Environmental legislation and regulations as applicable
  • Report any Environmental, Health and Safety concerns to management
  • Understand, support and comply with all food safety and quality policies/procedures as per SQF Code which includes but not limited to Good Manufacturing Practices, HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points), Food Security, Kosher, Organic, Allergen, NHP, Hygiene, government regulations and customer requirements
  • Attend SQF, GMPs and Quality training as required
  • Responsible to report food safety problems and/or quality problems to Managers/Supervisors or person with authority to initiate actions
