Job Description

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, act as the technical expert in the production/packaging area of the business, being responsible for performance and improvements enabling the Operations Department to achieve business targets. Execute projects either as a lead or as a key stakeholder as assigned by the Engineering Manager. The Candidate will have opportunities to develop their skills on the job and depending on their background, may lead projects and support the wider business as they are able. Site support through documentation and Engineering Drawings will be a key part of this role.

Key Responsibilities:

Support Operations and Engineering

  • Become the go-to expert on packaging equipment, site capability and performance, developing and monitoring KPIs and enabling the Operations Department to succeed.
  • Maintain Engineering and Technical site documentation and drawings
  • Introduce industry trends and latest technology to the business
  • Propose improvement projects based on areas of interest and/or study to help uniquely contribute to the business.
  • Work closely with the Maintenance Department to improve maintenance practices and site reliability.
  • Help improve Arterra’s automation capabilities by driving improvements leading to efficiency, reliability, and in-house technical aptitude.

Continuous Improvement

  • Incorporate Lean and other CI tools where appropriate into all daily activities, including maintenance scheduling and execution, project management, etc.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement and provide recommendations for process or capital investments of equipment, or modification and/or upgrades to maximize operational efficiencies.
  • Establish and expand Total Productive Maintenance plans and procedures.

Special Projects

  • Act as a technical resource to internal project teams in areas of business operations (Production, Packaging, Utilities, or Winemaking).
  • Projects may be in Niagara Falls (main site) or at other Ontario sites.
  • Manage or lead smaller projects of increasing complexity as appropriate
  • Review, create and maintain technical documentation
  • Lead contractor visits and manage equipment installation and/or maintenance
  • Ensure internal goals are met, and that Engineering Discipline is applied to projects

Health, Safety and Food Safety

  • Work in safe manner following all applicable laws, regulations, and company policy
  • Help ensure safety of coworkers and contractors with safe work practices, particularly machine guarding driving preventative measures.
  • Become knowledgeable in HACCP, ISO and GMP where appropriate to ensure product quality.

Qualifications

  • College or University graduate with Mechanical/ Industrial /Electrical Engineering, or related technical field.
  • Experience in a related industry would be an asset (Consumer Packaged Goods, Food and Beverage, Wine, Packaging)
  • Experience being a change leader, ideally in a unionized environment
  • Keen interest and experience with PLC programming and/or Industrial Automation
  • Professional designation, or EIT or OACETT Enrollment as a minimum
  • Excellent AutoCAD skills
  • Programming skills (PLC/ladder logic)
  • Knowledge of TPM
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Project Management
  • Ability to mobilize and solve problems
  • Work Under pressure
  • Ability to work on, and lead teams
  • Critical and analytical sense
  • Excellent computer skills and proficiency in all standard business software (MS Office, Email, etc)
  • Basic understanding of LEAN manufacturing principles
  • A self-starter, with the ability to passionately drive improvements with many priorities and little supervision.
