The Health and Safety Specialist drives the continuous improvement of workplace safety and administers Occupational Health and Safety Management program on a regional level across operations, hospitality, and retail business units. Works with business unit teams to develop, monitor and administer safety programs, training/audits that generate positive and continuous improvements in workplace safety.

What you will be doing:

  • Return to Work/ Claims Management

Administer the Workers’ Compensation Program in conformance with applicable laws. Manage workers compensation claims and coordinate Return to Work plans. Coordinate with external professionals such as physicians and attorneys on Return-to-Work accommodations. Act as an internal liaison to leaders for STD claims when required.

  • Safety Program Management

Ensure the Occupational Safety Management Program complies with legislative requirements. Consistently review and document Safety program and equipment, and support management/employees in meeting KPI’s and safety targets Performs on-site inspections and audits physical conditions of various business units. Advise on potential physical hazards in the work environment and communicate safety awareness. Provide support to Learning and Development team and business units to deliver internal/external training in areas such as, but not limited to: Emergency Response, Forklift, Confined Space, WHMIS, New Worker orientation. Mentor and support JHSC teams to meet workplace obligations. Make recommendations to continuously improve Safety culture in the workplace.

  • Managing the Incident Safety System

Administrator for the Incident Reporting system and the timely tracking of Incidents and Investigation reports. Record data and trends related to Hazards, Near Miss and Incidents. Conduct meetings and lead discussions regarding workers compensation issues and Incident Trends. Assist in the investigation and corrective action of all serious accidents/injuries/illnesses or near misses.

  • Provide Assistance to Leadership Teams

Review the National Health and Safety documents and make changes where necessary. Provide coaching and counselling on safety related issues to all parts of the business and collaborate with the H&S business partners on the creation of safety related policies and programs. Work with business unit leaders and H&S partners to identify requirements for OHS annual budgets

What you bring:

  • Post-Secondary Education or Equivalent College Certificate or Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety
  • 3-5 Years’ Experience in a safety related position-Manufacturing/Agriculture/Retail/Hospitality
  • Extensive knowledge of OH&S legislation and WSIB regulations, guidelines, and standards
  • Strong computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Well organized with an ability to prioritize and multi-task
  • Excellent problem solving and communication skills (verbally and written)
  • Ability to maintain clear and accurate documentation
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Manufacturing experience
  • Working in a unionized environment
  • Proven claim management experience
  • Standard First Aid
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • CRSP or CHSC Certification
