Labatt Breweries of Canada

Company Overview:

Labatt Breweries of Canada has been shaped by more than 160 years of brewing excellence. Throughout the company’s history, Labatt has never lost sight of the fact that it is in business to exceed the expectations of its customers. From Newfoundland to British Columbia, 3,000 employees come to work every day dedicated to exactly this objective.

In 1847, the company’s first brewery produced close to one thousand bottles of beer a year. Today, Labatt is a proud member of AB InBev and makes about 60 local and world-renowned beers available to customers across Canada. Much has changed at Labatt since its founding, but one thing remains the same — our commitment to brewing great beer.

In 1995, Labatt was acquired by Interbrew, the Belgium-based global brewing company with origins dating back to Belgium’s Den Hoorn brewery in 1366. In 2004, Interbrew, the world’s third largest brewer combined with Brazilian-based AmBev, the world’s fifth largest brewer, to create InBev.

In November 2008, InBev acquired the U.S. based Anheuser-Busch, one of the world’s iconic brewing companies. The merged company, Anheuser-Busch InBev, is the global leader in beer and one of the world’s top five consumer products companies. St. Louis, MO is headquarters for both the company’s North American operations and for Anheuser-Busch. Leuven, Belgium remains world headquarters.

Anheuser-Busch InBev is the dominant force in global brewing. It had (pro-forma) revenues of US $ 38.55 billion in 2007 and produced more than 421 million hectoliters of beer annually. Geographically diversified with a balanced exposure to developed and developing markets, Anheuser-Busch InBev has 120,000 employees in more than 30 countries around the globe and operates 153 breweries.

Corporate Culture:

Labatt and other Anheuser-Busch InBev operations around the globe share the vision of becoming the best, most profitable beer company in a better world. Our promise is to create enduring bonds with consumers so that they enjoy our brands time and again. AB InBev’s Dream, People and Culture are the driving forces behind everything we do, wherever we operate

Ten principles form the essence of our culture:

Our Dream

1. Our shared dream energizes everyone to work in the same direction: to be the best beer company in a better world.

Our People

2. Great people, allowed to grow at the pace of their talent and compensated accordingly, are the most valuable assets of our company.

3. We must select people who, with the right development, challenges and encouragement, can be better than ourselves. We will be judged by the quality of our teams.

Our Culture

4. We are never completely satisfied with our results, which are the fuel of our company. Focus and zero-complacency guarantee lasting competitive advantage.

5. The consumer is the Boss. We connect with our consumers through meaningful brand experiences, balancing heritage and innovation, and always in a responsible way.

6. We are a company of owners. Owners take results personally.

7. We believe common sense and simplicity are usually better guidelines than unnecessary sophistication and complexity.

8. We manage our costs tightly, to free up resources that will support top-line growth.

9. Leadership by personal example is the best guide to our culture. We do what we say.

10. We don’t take shortcuts. Integrity, hard work, quality and consistency are keys to building our company.

These principles make up a powerful, common culture that is further underpinned by six competencies shared by our people around the globe. Our competencies define who we are, both in our beliefs and in our actions. They involve thinking big and delivering on challenging targets, developing the best people and teams; having impact & influence; thinking and acting as owners; executing with discipline;and always leading by personal example.

At Labatt and at AB InBev, our commitment to our culture is paramount. It is the means by which every one of us can take ownership of our dream, aligned behind the vision of making our company the best in the industry. We believe each individual has the power to make things happen. Our people choose to exercise that power.
