Often times I see job descriptions that indicate CPG experience.  My question is - what is so unique to CPG from other industries?

Is it something about the packaging itself? Is it because it is perisable product? Is there something about the way the business is run or the time to market products based on changing consumer preferences and direct competition?

I beleive it is because we are very well rounded.  We have good exposure to the basics of sales and marketing: the 4 Ps.  As well, we are sellers, but we think more strategically than sales people in other industries, who are more focused on the next order.

Our sales cycles can be much longer and require greater analysis of several factors (customer, channel, category etc.) than just fitting in a product to a business.  We deal with several variables.

I think it is this analytical and strategic thinking that makes us attractive to other industries.
