Jeff Doucette | Status: just released the second edition of SINS... Read more
Posted in January

Each year I anxiously await the month of January, as this is when Deloitte publishes their excellent report on the global retailing industry titled “Global Powers of Retailing 2010”.

I believe that this report should be mandatory reading for anyone working in retail or as a supplier to retailers, regardless of the capacity (account management, marketing, logistics).

This year’s report is, not surprisingly, focused on “Emerging from the downturn”.

You can access a free PDF copy at the link below:

Although I have just had a chance to skim this report so far here are a couple of quick observations:

1) Tesco fell one spot on the global ranking and was overtaken by Germany’s Metro Group in the # 3 spot.

2) Nine Canadian retailers made the Top 250 list with Loblaws, Couche Tard and Empire (Sobey’s) being the Top 3 Canadian retailers.

3) Couche Tard and RONA both placed in the Top 50 fastest growing retailers in the world.

4) Hudson’s Bay Trading Company, which is now classified as a US retailer, ranks #118 on the Top 250 list.

5) The LCBO, Ontario’s liquor retailer fell from the list after ranking #250 in last year’s report.

I encourage you to take a read through the report and share your findings with your colleagues and customers.

All the best,

Jeff Doucette
