Position Summary:

This position will act as process leader and a leader related to all Grocery functions for the Ontario Grocery Sales team. The candidate will play a key role in leading the initiatives and strategy for growing Grocery wine sales, volume and share at LCL, Sobeys, Metro and Walmart etc. This role will be focused on driving sales for Ontario by building on total store strategy and category strategy, through ongoing analysis of category pricing, promotions, assortment, shelving and planogram.

The position will also act as an expert within the team for grocery shopper insight and be an important asset in the customer plan development. This includes understanding shopping baskets, penetration and basket sizes and working with trade marketing to develop strategies, tactics and programs that drive sales.

The candidate will be the resident expert in leveraging Duhumby, Precima and IRI data for grocery and leading planogram flips.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and manage Category Management projects in grocery including category pricing and promotion strategies, shelving, plano-grams and assortment exercises for Sobeys, LCL, Metro and Walmart.
  • Build and create tools, scorecard and presentations driven by category insights to develop Import and domestic wine sales. Present key category insights that will meet customer and shopper needs and develop along with executable recommendations
  • Develop and manage Grocery Sales projects including, grocery blitz’s, grocery field selling tools, grocery audits and grocery score cards for Ontario.
  • Oversee the usage of appropriate tools for effective Category Management. Including Precima, DunHumby and IRI data maintenance and relationships, relationship with Tool Box Solutions and communicate category activities relating to data collection in the field by project in all channels.
  • Analyze and interpret quantitative data from multiple data sources, bringing together POS data, Shopper Insights and Category Management knowledge to drive sales and margin for the category
  • Own the relationship with the Grocery Sales team, laisse with IT and managing the reporting process and leading in the development of field tactics.
  • Create fact based Power Point presentations that assists the sales team and our customers in identify category opportunities. As well as act as the primary analytical resource for the sales team on any deep dive analysis.
  • Initiates and maintains tools to identify, synthesize and source data from a variety of sources to effectively integrate fact-based and category-based sales solutions across total beverage alcohol for assigned retailers using Precima, DunHumby, IRI and eventually build of Grocery Power BI in Ontario
  • The Category Manager should be able to portray a solid understanding of the performance of Wine and Refreshment Categories within geographic and retail marketing areas, across brand, varietal and price point dimensions.
  • Proactively review competitive behaviour and identify specific tactics and opportunities to execute against the competition
  • Leverage US and Cross Country Category Management tools and resources to share best practices and shopper insights that can be transferred into Ontario
  • Own the grocery Category Management relationship with Walmart, Metro, Sobeys and LCL and drive category strategies that grow sales for our customers.

Job Requirements


  • University Degree


  • 3-5 years in a Category Management role at a reputable CPG company or retailer.
  • Experience in Beverage Alcohol or CPG
  • A combination of experience with Nielsen, DunHumby, Precima and IRI
  • Experience completing category plans including planograms
  • Customer facing experience

Technical/Specialized Skills:

  • Strong computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Internet Explorer)
  • Familiarity with databases and database management
  • Strong analytical performance
  • Strong understanding of Category Management
  • Strong understanding of Grocery Insights
  • Strong communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Advanced analysis skills with particular attention to detail
